Updated 2026-10-13 · 3 min · Garage Reframe studio

A printable step-by-step checklist for organizing a garage in a weekend: sort, haul, zone, install, label, maintain.

Before the weekend

  • Photograph every wall and the ceiling
  • Measure width, depth, ceiling height and door clearance
  • Decide the zones: parking, drop zone, gear wall, seasonal, chemicals, bench
  • Book hazardous-waste drop-off (paint, batteries, propane) with the county
  • Order matching 27-gal bins, labels and a marker
  • Confirm stud spacing (16 or 24 in) and joist direction

Saturday: sort and clear

  • Pull everything into the driveway by category
  • Keep / donate / recycle / hazardous / haul — decide once
  • Load the donate pile into the car now
  • Sweep and wash the floor; note cracks and stains
  • Mark zone boundaries on the floor with painter’s tape

Sunday: install and place

  • Assemble shelving and anchor tall units to the wall
  • Mount track or slatwall into studs; hang bikes, ladders, chairs
  • Install overhead rack with a helper and lag bolts into joists
  • Place bins by zone; heavy at knee-to-shoulder height
  • Label the short side of every bin
  • Park the car and check the door clearance

Every week

  • Empty the drop zone
  • Return tools to the wall
  • Donate bin full? It goes in the car
